Dear Inventables,
Here's what I read in your job description for an Operations Manager:
We need a creative person that understands science and is able to make it come alive in a context that will help inspire our customers.
We are excited by our product and seek a leader that can join us and enhance our excitement, productivity and the quality of the results our customers enjoy.
We want someone that cares about science and technology and that is able to join us in our mission with joy.
That describes me.
You might also have said that you need a person who
is a voracious reader and teller of science stories.
has strong communication skills and experience organizing complicated projects.
has an entrepreneurial spirit, that is not only willing, but desires to join a team in building a great company even if it means putting on someone else's hat.
That also describes me.
I want to work for Inventables because I want to spend my career locating new technologies and finding ways to use them to inspire inventors. I am an engineer with a broad interest in technology and science. I can think of nothing that I would prefer doing, nor that I am better suited to do, than this job.
You asked for accomplishments:
- Working with the MIT Media Lab and R.R. Donnelley & Sons, I conceived and documented a research plan for something called the intelligent publication. It was in very many ways, the world wide web. Too early, but I take pride in having figured it out and that smart people to agreed it was a good idea.
- I made a presentation about a complicated printing technology issue for an industry seminar in Florida. The audience slept through the presentations before mine. They clapped furiously when I was done. Many people congratulated me on making a very abstruse topic clear, interesting and lively.
- I conceived an idea, automatic online backup, in the late eighties. Fifteen years later, I was able to build a company to do it. During the process, I recruited capital and staff, customers and vendors. I organized the company, wrote the website and was the spokesmodel for the marketing campaign. The accomplishment of a vision is very satisfying.
- Working for an equipment manufacturer, I led the effort to create a great trade show presence to showcase our technology. The booth concept was innovative (I devised a way to capture the primary message, Workflow, into the organization of the booth). I convinced our dealer network to contribute nearly a million dollars worth of equipment and seventy people to staff the booth. Best of all, the booth went up flawlessly and was a huge success. Project management is a joy itself. With creativity, it's exquisite.
The bottom line is this: I want to come to work for Inventables because I love science, technology and telling people about those things. I have a unique combination of science knowledge, spirit and communication skills. I am an experienced leader and have expanded the opportunity in every situation in which I have worked. I want to bring these things to Inventables because I think your product and the things that you do to make it happen are fascinating and important. I want to do what I can to help you succeed.
Best Regards,
